Wow, what a year!  We could not sum up 2018 any other way.  As we wrote our report a year ago, we recognised there were many challenges facing us – the garden of remembrance, local mission and finances.  By the time of the APCM in mid-April, a far greater challenge had arrived – Fiona announcing that she was leaving in mid-July.  This shaped the rest of the year and gave us the chance to serve in ways we had never envisaged.  Thankfully, Fiona had made detailed plans and delegated her work to an experienced team with a wonderful capacity to work together and to engage others to fill the gaps which arose.  We have been delighted to see the team grow and strive to keep our church development plans on track.

In the early part of the year, highlights included the Archdeacons Visitation by the Area Dean, where there were several favourable comments and a few points to improve.  New procedures and systems for safeguarding were approved by the PCC.  After the vote at the APCM defeated the garden of remembrance proposal, a fine Book of Remembrance was introduced in its own cabinet at the church entrance, donated by David Harding and his family in memory of Betty.  Further rearrangement of the church included the arrival of new library shelves and a prayer corner. 

A new initiative this year was the Mission at the Midsummer Event, where we joined with Heathervale and Through Faith Mission to engage in conversations of faith with our community.  The results included a willingness to work closer with our friends at Heathervale, and a jointly-run Alpha course in the Autumn.

As the Summer continued, we organised a barbeque for Fiona and Paul’s departure, which was a joyful gathering of the church family.  Two major buildings projects followed, with the makeover of the kitchen in the main hall complex and the replacement of the outdoor play surface.

We have been delighted to welcome Bethany Wood as Children’s Intern, who arrived just in time for a bumper Holiday Club.  The changing needs of the Sunday School led us to rearrange coffee after the 9.30am service to be held in the small hall, thus enabling 9.30 and Connect congregations to mix more than previously.  One of our continuing challenges is to enhance the bridges across the different parts of the church family, including Messy Church.

In the Autumn, CAP Sunday refocussed our attention on the needs of the wider community, and renewed impetus to make contributions for the local foodbank.  The PCC had also agreed to move substantial reserves to BOOM Credit Union and Tridos, an ethical bank.  Local mission continued at the Christmas Market, with bauble booklets given to children, bringing the Christmas story and greetings from the New Haw churches.

Throughout the year, there were 13 baptisms, no weddings and 12 funerals.

Our report would not be complete without mention of the work involved in preparation of the Parish Profile and the Vision Day.  We are very grateful to all who helped in these essential parts of the process to attract our new Vicar.  This report is written in advance of the application deadline and interviews, although the on-going prayerful support from All Saints is wonderful.  There seems no better way to end our report than our church’s verse for the year of 2019:

            “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
